MODS

Mods, or modules, are packages (sidebar, feature, set of quotes, etc.) used to expand coverage on a spread. These often relate back to the theme/concept of the book. They can give you the opportunity to tell different parts of the story through fun and new perspectives, or you might use them to cover an event, person or story relating back to the overall spread topic.

MOD STYLES

Use mods to creatively present stories and copy throughout your book. Experiment with different mod styles like photo stories, illustrations, surveys and infographics. Check out the YearbookBesties' 50 Ways to Tell a Story handout here to inspire your mod library.

GREAT MODS DON'T JUST HAPPEN.

PLAN AHEAD

Discuss the best way to tell each story to make people understand it. Complete a webbing or coverage sheet for your topic to brainstorm ideas.

PICK YOUR MODS

Consider the following when choosing your story format:

  • number of people included

  • types of photos available (candids, environmental portraits, even submitted selfies)

  • quality of anecdotes for quotes

  • details such as time, date, place and weather

  • available space on the spread

  • visual variety of the design on the spread.
